CDC Releases Everyday Actions for Schools to Prevent and Control the Spread of Infections

CTSI provides infection control and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) testing, consulting, and training services to optimize the built environment while identifying and mitigating exposure risks to mold, bacteria, viruses, and chemical hazards.

New York, NY – WEBWIRE

The indoor environmental quality of classrooms and other learning facilities is an essential component for everyones well-being and ability to learn.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released new guidance for preventing the spread of infections in K-12 schools. The agency has shared various everyday actions that schools can take to help keep students healthy by minimizing the spread of infections.

Five of the actions listed by CDC include:

  • Taking steps for cleaner air
  • Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting
  • Hand washing
  • Respiratory etiquette
  • Vaccinations

Cleaner air can indeed reduce the likelihood of spreading disease, particularly respiratory viruses. Strategies listed by the agency to achieve this include:

  • Ensuring existing HVAC systems are providing outdoor air in accordance with ventilation design codes
  • Considering ventilation design and/or enhancements when remodeling or constructing new buildings to optimize clean air
  • Opening windows, when doing so does not create a safety hazard, to increase ventilation
  • Using portable air cleaners in spaces with low ventilation

The indoor environmental quality of classrooms and other learning facilities is an essential component for everyones well-being and ability to learn, said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. Poor IEQ is not just a comfort issue, exposure to elevated levels of biological contaminants, particulates, or chemicals can result in health concerns, infections, and learning challenges. At CTSI, our building science, infection control, and indoor environmental quality professionals have decades of experience helping schools, colleges, and universities optimize indoor conditions. We enhance the learning environment by providing air, surface, and water testing, consulting, and training services to identify and mitigate exposure risks to a wide range of potential issues.

CTSI also recently sponsored an educational video sharing the CDCs everyday action items for schools to prevent and control the spread of infections. It can be seen at: https://youtu.be/chhbvzt4WjM
