Kolkata doctor rape case: SIT submits documents linked to RG Kar financial irregularities to CBI

Kolkata doctor rape case: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) transferred all the documents associated with the alleged financial irregularities in RG Kar Hospital to the CBI on Saturday, reported ANI, citing Kolkata Police.

This development comes a day after the Calcutta High Court transferred the Special Investigation (SIT) probe into the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar to the CBI.

On Thursday, the Calcutta High Court reprimanded the West Bengal government for delaying the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT). During the hearing, the HC asked why it took a year for the government to form an SIT after allegations of financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital first emerged, reported PTI.

The SIT has been investigating the alleged corruption at the hospital since January 2021, a period that coincides with the tenure of Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the hospital.

RG Kar Hospital financial irregularities

According to news agency PTI, former deputy superintendent of RG Kar College and Hospital, Akhtar Ali, had reported Ghosh’s alleged financial irregularities to the state authorities in 2023. Later, Ali moved the court seeking an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate against ex-principal Sandip Ghosh over alleged financial irregularities during his tenure there. The state government formed the SIT committee this year.

Hearing the petition, Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, who is presiding over the case, asked why the SIT was constituted a year after the allegations came to light.

Ex-RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh reaches CBI today

During the ongoing CBI probe of Kolkata doctor rape case, former RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh reached CBI office in Kolkata on Saturday. The CBI is interrogating Ghosh in the rape case. He is also likely to undergo a polygraph test soon as the Court has granted permission to the CBI to proceed with the procedure. Along with Sandip Ghosh, five other people linked with the case will undergo the polygraph test.

These five include four doctors who had dinner with the deceased doctor on the day the incident occurred, as well as one civic volunteer. The Court has granted the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report on the investigation, which is to be presented on September 17.
