Roundup: Here’s What The Critics Think About Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered

On Xbox for the very first time!

Back in September, Crystal Dynamics announced Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered – with this pair of PlayStation classics now set to make their Xbox debuts on December 10th. Well, ahead of that launch we’re seeing some early reviews of this newly remastered collection, so we’ll gather these initial ratings into a handy roundup below.

Here’s what the critics are saying about Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered ahead of their first-ever arrivals on Xbox:

Tech Radar (4.5/5)

“Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered is the new gold standard that all modern remasters should strive to achieve. Developer Aspyr has taken Crystal Dynamic’s classic tale about a betrayed vampire seeking revenge and delivered an impeccable visual overhaul while maintaining the brooding gothic majesty that won Soul Reaver a legion of fans back at the turn of the millennium.”

Nintendo Life (8/10)

“Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 are just as enjoyable and atmospheric as they were two decades ago. This remaster treatment faithfully cleans up the visuals, adds some quality-of-life improvements, and stuffs the package with bonus materials, presenting the games at their best, notwithstanding some minor visual bugs. Here’s hoping the success of this collection sparks interest in a return to Nosgoth.”

Gaming Trend (8/10)

“Soul Reaver and its sequel are both perfect storms of story, voice work, soundtracks, and now they have the final pieces they needed to become classics for a new generation with revamped controls and now gorgeous graphics. While I’d like to see the execution be a touch cleaner, the sum of its parts is so damned strong that it lets you experience this incredible game all over again. I know you, Raziel. You are worthy.”

But Why Tho? (8/10)

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remastered is an impeccable remaster collection. While it has a few flaws, the narrative, world-building, soundtrack, and voice acting make the games a gratifying experience.”

Windows Central (3.5/5)

“Still, it’s proven that Aspyr has dedicated Soul Reaver fans on its development team, who were perhaps limited by the games’ engines and codebase in their scope on what can be done in a modern port. If you’re looking for a retro 3D platformer in a similar vein to Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, this is undoubtedly your next stop, but I can’t help feeling that Raziel deserved more.”

There aren’t too many reviews out there for this one just yet, so as a result, we’re not seeing any Metacritic / OpenCritic average ratings at the time of writing. Going off the early reviews though, things are looking pretty positive for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered – which heads to Xbox tomorrow, December 10th.
