Mowbie Light Stimulation Electric Razor Review: An Ideal Razor for Beginners

I DON’T KNOW about you, but that whole cliché of a dad patiently teaching his son how to shave was not my experience. Nothing against my own father, but when it came to learning how to shave, I was left to my own devices. Maybe it was because my dad used an electric razor and, back then, no one was really advising (or thinking about) taking an electric razor to a teenager’s face. Flash forward decades later, however, and I am a dedicated electric razor user—much like my dad. Still, I wish I had access to the Mowbie Light Stimulation Rotary Shaver back then.

Luckily for guys growing up now, things have changed. There are dozens of razors on the market, which means that learning to shave doesn’t have to involve taking a naked blade and shaving cream to your face—welcome news for kids like me who are left to their own devices or have to deal with irritating skin issues like acne that can make traditional shaving painful. That still doesn’t mean, however, that all electric razors are good for beginners. Enter the Mowbie Light Stimulation Rotary Shaver. This simple, easy-to-use razor is not only ideal for beginners, but also anyone who struggles with breakouts, skin irritation issues or has thinner facial hair.

It offers an understandable experience straight out of the box, with a few bells and whistles that make the experience easier but don’t bog it down. Interestingly, it also features LED light technology, which the brand claims helps improve your skin while you shave (more on that later). While not nearly as powerful as many other electric razors on the market, that’s what makes it so good for beginners or people with sensitive skin. And at one of the lowest prices we’ve found for a worthwhile electric razor, it’s a great stepping stone for a more powerful option down the road once your skin gets used to this type of shaving.

The name of the game with the Mowbie Light Stimulation Rotary Shaver is simplicity. Besides the three pivoting rotary heads of this shaver, there aren’t any other shaving features to speak of. It’s simple and easy to use (literally, just turn it on) which is why it’s so good for beginner shavers. The only real learning curve here is the generally advised two weeks to allow your skin to get used to using an electric razor, though this is often more for people who are used to traditional razor shaving and not those who have never used a razor before at all.

It’s slightly difficult to compare the details of the Mowbie to other electric razors because the brand does not disclose things like motor speed (which means it’s nothing to write home about), but we can say from first-hand use that it’s not nearly as powerful as many other electric razors we’ve tested. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as long as you know that from the get-go. It’s not going to slice through days worth of thick stubble, like say the Braun Series 9 Pro+, but it does a great job at cutting thinner beards and light growth. It’s what also makes it good for shaving with acne, since the lower power makes it less irritating on skin.

One thing Mowbie’s electric shaver does have that others do not is the integrated LED panels that are intended to help with light therapy for your skin. LED therapy is a proven treatment to help kill acne-causing bacteria, calm inflammation, improve skin texture, and more, but generally you need to keep the light device static for a period of time in order to allow for adequate coverage. You also need to use it consistently for a while to start seeing results. Those two things complicate the LED element of the Mowbie.

When you’re shaving, you’re moving the device around your face, so while you are getting coverage from the light, it may not be long enough to really make much of a difference. If you shave every day, consistency may not be an issue for you, but if you don’t, it will likely take longer for you to see any effects of the LED—if you see any at all. The integrated LED is a cool idea, and offers an innovative feature that we haven’t seen in electric razors before, but from our testing, it didn’t make much of a difference in our skin (if you really want to explore LED, we recommend other devices like masks).

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Sometimes simple is just better. There’s something to be said for “dumb” (meaning “non-smart”) devices, especially devices that may work just fine without integrated smartphone apps and built-in AI-powered shaving routines. That’s doubly true if you’re just learning how to shave or you have a thin or patchy beard. Razors with a ton of features and power aren’t always necessary for lighter whiskers, which is why this simple yet effective electric razor is ideal. It gets the job done without the aid of a ton of extras and realistically, that’s what’s important.

One of the biggest draws of the Mowbie is the price. At only $37.99, it’s one of the most inexpensive electric razors we’ve found that we also think works well enough to endorse. It may be a bit more expensive than your disposable razor/shaving cream combo, but in the long run you’ll end up spending less when you realize you don’t have to replenish it every month or so. And the price also makes it ideal for beginners since the barrier of entry is low.

Since the Mowbie is waterproof, cleaning is easy. Make sure the device is turned off, pop the lid of the shaving unit using the blade release button (it hinges up like a door) and run the entire thing under running water. You can use the cleaning brush as well to make sure no hair is left behind. When you’re done, let it dry and pop the unit back in place.

While the Mowbie Light Stimulation Electric Razor isn’t for everyone, we believe it is a great option for anyone who is just learning how to shave (particularly with an electric razor), has a thinner beard, or has skin issues like acne that can often make shaving difficult. Its simplicity and ease of use make up for the lack of features and, while the shaving power is low compared to many other razors on the market, that’s what makes it ideal for certain people, especially beginners or those with sensitive skin.

The only minor caveat is that it can be somewhat difficult to find, as it’s not available on Amazon or through Mowbie directly. Right now, you can really only purchase it through Walmart—and, of course, the link below.
