Eagles waive their No. 4 quarterback

The Philadelphia Eagles waived depth quarterback Ian Book on Tuesday afternoon, according to an official team announcement.

This news is a positive development as it relates to the expected availability of the Eagles’ quarterbacks. If the team was seriously worried about not having Jalen Hurts and/or Kenny Pickett for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers, they probably wouldn’t have waived Book when they could’ve kept him around to be the emergency QB.

There’s been some concern about Hurts’ status since he’s yet to clear the concussion protocol since getting hurt in Week 16. But reports have indicated he should be ready to play this weekend. Book’s departure is another sign pointing to Hurts playing.

With Hurts expected to start, the guess here is that Pickett remains QB2 with Tanner McKee serving as the emergency quarterback.

The Eagles originally re-signed Book leading up to their Week 17 game against the Dallas Cowboys. He served as the emergency QB in that game before then serving as the top backup to McKee in Week 18. He did not play any snaps during his return to Philly.

NFL insider Mike Garafolo notes that the Eagles could sign Book to their practice squad if/when he clears waivers. Doesn’t hurt to have a fourth quarterback option for the playoffs.

The Eagles currently have one roster opening to fill. We’ll see what they do with that spot.
