Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald seems pretty happy with the idea of having Geno Smith back as his starting quarterback for the 2025 season. Not only that, he also believes that Smith is the quarterback who can get Seattle back to the Super Bowl and ultimately win a championship.
Smith is entering the final year of his contract with the Seahawks, and there has been some speculation as to whether or not the team sees him as a long-term answer.
Macdonald tried to make his position on the matter very clear on Friday, telling Fox 13 TV that he wants Smith to be his quarterback.
“I want Geno to be here,” said Macdonald. “I think he’s a heck of a player. I feel like Geno’s the best for the team right now. I’ll be involved with it. Ultimately, it’s not my decision. It’s a Seahawks decision, but Geno knows how we feel about him, and we love him as our starting quarterback, for sure.”
He went on to say “we can win a championship with Geno Smith. We really believe that and can’t wait to get back to work with him.”
That is a big statement, but he was emphatic in his belief of Smith’s ability to be the Seahawks’ franchise quarterback.
He has been in Seattle for the past five seasons, spending the past three as the team’s starting quarterback following the trade of Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. When he took over the starting role in 2022, Smith had had never fully established himself as a starter in the NFL. By that point, he was 32 years old and mostly an afterthought as a starter.
But Smith took the opportunity he got in Seattle and made the most of it, completing 69.8% of his passes and throwing for 30 touchdowns in leading the Seahawks to a wild-card berth against the San Francisco 49ers.
That performance earned him a new three-year extension in Seattle.
The two years that followed were not as consistent for Smith, as he struggled with turnovers at times and did not fully recapture the magic or level of play he had in his first year as a starter for the Seahawks.
On one hand, as long as Smith is on the roster and slated to be his team’s starting quarterback, there is no way that Macdonald is going to express anything other than belief in him. But if the Seahawks are being realistic about what Smith is — and what they still need in order to become a championship-level team — they probably should be keeping their eyes open if the opportunity to find a younger, higher-ceiling quarterback presents itself.
