The summer of Kong is over — it’s a bug’s life now!
Hollow Knight: Silksong really is the big deal everyone was making it out to be. In its first week on The Bomb 12, the game is already on top of the chart. This is one of those anomaly games that exists on its own plane apart from everything else like it. It’s reaching more people than 99.999% of indie games, which makes sense when you remember that its predecessor sold literally five-times better than any Metroid game.
Metroidvanias? We should be calling them Silksongs.
For the rest of the chart, we saw some big moves as people broke up with their summer games to hop aboard the Silksong train. Donkey Kong Bananza dropped all the way down to No. 8. It had been No. 1 ever since it launched, but it does seem like people are finishing it and moving on. I’ll be curious to see if people continue to pick it up through the holiday. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach dropped even further. It’s nearly off the chart at No. 12.
Familiar hits like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (No. 4), Helldivers II (No. 5), and Uma Musume Pretty Derby (No. 6) took up the middle of The Bomb 12. While No Man’s Sky creeped at 10 thanks to its most recent DLC and Cyberpunk 2077 popped up at No. 11 because it’s Cyberpunk.
Back to the top of the chart, as predicted, Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eaterwas able to topple most of the competition. By all accounts, the game is doing very well. Konami confirmed it sold a million copies in a day. But it wasn’t the only older franchise that broke into the top 3 thanks to a facelift. The new Shinobi: Art of Vengeance has also wowed newcomers alongside series diehards.
And that’s it for this week. This is The Bomb 12 that is going to carry us into the fall game-release season. And for now, I’ll be shocked if anything knocks Silksong off the top of the chart for the next month. Maybe Borderlands 4? I doubt it.
