On the 4th of May, at the iconic T-Mobile Arena of Las Vegas, Nevada, the undisputed super middleweight champion will defend his titles against the voluntary challenge of his Mexican counterpart, Jaime Munguia. As he assumes the position of the favorite for this matchup, his fans await to see the moment he undertakes his ring walk. What song will he walk to? A nostalgic moment at Canelo vs. Jermell Charlo

In September last year, the Jalisco-based went against Jermell Charlo in another Las Vegas fight. For his walkout, Mexican rapper Santa Fe Klan paid tribute to late rapper Lefty SM. The rapper was killed in an armed attack in his Jalisco residence.

Santa Fe Klan was accompanied by Tornillo Vázquez for the walkout as they sang “Por mi México.” Originally, the number was sung by Santa Fe Klan and Lefty SM. The performance was poignant and powerful. The flag-bearer of Mexican culture in the boxing space, by opting for “Por mi Mexico,” Canelo represented the interests of his people. He reflected on the pain of the country that was mourning the untimely demise of Lefty SM.

On the fight front, while the junior Charlo brother had moved two weights for this fight, Alvarez continued his streak of wins. He won on points. For an event that was staged at such a massive scale, Canelo chose a befitting song.

For his fight before Charlo, the fighter had another significant choice for his walkout.

A Royal Walkout

Last year in May, he fought British boxing star, John Ryder. For his walkout song, Canelo doubled down on a spectacular choice. In front of the massive 50,000 audience that gathered at the Estadio Akron, his name glowed in red right before he made his entry.

Before the fight, the atmosphere crackled with national pride. First, the loudspeakers blared Jalisco’s anthem, the Mexican state Canelo hails from, solidifying his connection to his hometown fans. This was followed by the playing of both national anthems: “God Save The King” for Britain and “Himno Nacional Mexicano” for Mexico, highlighting the international nature of the fight and the divided loyalties of the stadium crowd.

However, that wasn’t even the walk-out song. The song came after. As he took to the ring after John Ryder made his entry, a montage, powerful to the fullest, played. It showed all his noteworthy knockouts to date.

The Mexican boxing icon, Canelo Alvarez, emerged from the tunnel to a pulsating remix of “Eye of the Tiger,” electrifying the crowd. As fireworks marked his arrival, he made his appearance wearing a crown. A mariachi band, a staggering 150-strong, erupted in a wave of festive music as the champion, the undisputed face of boxing, stalked toward the ring, laser-focused on John Ryder.

Canelo-esque Entry, Yet Again

In 2021, for his fight against Billy Joe Saunders, Canelo did not budge in going all out for his walkout. At the AT&T Stadium of Arlington, Texas, the fighter entered on a Cinco de Mayo theme. It was based on the grand celebration Mexicans undertook to celebrate the region’s victory over the French forces of Napolean III.
