ApeCoin DAO Approves Registration of a New Top-Level Domain
Reading Time: 2 minutes
- ApeCoin DAO has approved a proposal seeking to register a “.APE” domain as a top-level domain
- The registration will be done with the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
- The DAO said the move is meant to allow for the domain name to be used in both the web2 and web3 world
Two months after the ApeCoin DAO community voted to migrate from Ethereum to Arbitrum for scaling purposes, the community has again ratified another expansion proposal. The DAO has agreed to register a new top-level domain (TLD) known as “.APE” with the help of web3 firm D3. The domain will be registered with ICANN, a body that oversees the global domain and IP address landscape, making it possible for .APE domains to be used in both the web2 and web3 space.
The Second Opportunity in the Internet’s History
According to the proposal supported by over 90% of the community, the need to have .APE domain aligns with ICANN’s “second-ever instance in the history of the internet” where it has requested interested entities to apply for new TLDs.

The proposal further noted that registering such a domain will have a positive economic impact on the Ape community, adding that it establishes ApeCoin “as a major real-world asset with interoperability and utility at its core.”
ApeCoin and D3 will share revenue generated from their partnership in a 50/50 ratio. D3 will handle the TLD application with ICANN, a process that can take up to one year.
Dormant for Two Decades
D3 CEO Fred Hsu observed that the domain name space has remained largely dormant in the last two decades, adding that the move will redefine how domains are used.
ApeCoin DAO has been expanding the boundaries for the ApeCoin community and has in the past revealed plans to support Bored Apes-focused community projects. A year ago, it launched a marketplace to facilitate trading of Yuga Labs-owned NFTs.
With ApeCoin DAO extending its reach to the domain names’ world, it’s to be seen whether other web3 projects will also follow a similar path.
