HDFC Bank Ltd., India’s largest private lender, has declared a bonus issue in he ratio of 1:1, at the conclusion of its board meet on Saturday, July 19.

This means, shareholders will be eligible to avail one free share for every one share that they own as on the record date, which is yet to be disclosed.

Additionally, the board has also approved a special dividend of ₹5 per share.

This comes after HDFC Bank received ₹10,000 crore as part of its partial stake sale in its non-bank lending arm HDB Financial Services, during the latter’s IPO.

HDFC Bank has never issued bonus shares to its shareholders based on the records available on BSE. This will be the first such instance.

At the end of the June quarter, HDFC Bank had over 36 lakh small retail shareholders, or those with authorised share capital of up to ₹2 lakh, who held a 10.32% stake in the lender.

HDFC Bank had last paid a dividend of ₹22 per share last month to its shareholders, following a final dividend of ₹19.5 per share in May 2024, ₹19 per share in May 2023 and ₹15.5 per share in May 2022.

Shares of HDFC Bank ended at the lowest point of the day on Friday, closing 1.6% lower at ₹1,956. The stock has risen only 1.1% in the last one month, and is up 10% so far in 2025.
