  • Ubisoft has launched its first NFT game called “Grimoria Chronicles”
  • The Oasys blockchain powers the game’s NFTs
  • Grimoria Chronicles is a competitive multiplayer turn-based RPG (role-playing game) game

Gaming heavyweight Ubisoft has released its first original blockchain and NFT game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. The free-to-play computer game takes a competitive multiplayer and turn-based approach where squad members take turns leading their mates in battles. The game is available through the game publishers’ Connect platform and the Grimoria Chronicles’ NFTs are optional for players, making it appealing to traditional gamers who aren’t familiar with collectibles and boosting the adoption of blockchain-powered games.

The Release Comes Over a Year Since Its Announcement

Grimoria Chronicles features “magical playable figurines” known as champions that live in the “dark world of Grimoria.” The game is open to everyone and involves assembling champions and using them to “outdraft” a rival squad.

Ubisoft released the game’s NFTs in two seasons, with the last mint taking place three months ago when 75,000 NFTs were minted. The game publisher gave away the collectibles for free but limited the number of collectibles per wallet.

The game’s release comes over a year since it was announced early last year. Over the months, it has launched a NFT mint known as the “Warlords mint,” and released a gameplay trailer. Holders of Warlord NFTs had the first priority during the July mint dubbed “Champions mint.”

Not Ubisoft’s First Entry Into Web3

Grimoria Chronicles is Ubisoft’s first original blockchain game but not its first entry into the web3 space. In November last year, for example, it partnered with blockchain platform Immutable to create a web3 game.

It has also in the past partnered with social media platform Reddit to offer free Rabbids NFTs. The collectibles were available to the platform’s users and meant to be used as profile pictures.

In February, Ubisoft announced that it had partnered with AI firm Helika, a move it said would help it enhance Grimoria Chronicles.

With Ubisoft releasing its first blockchain game, it’s to be seen whether it’ll bring conventional gamers to the web3 space.
