Rebecca Dillon brings her own passion and years of dedication to every beat she plays, elevating 7Descent’s music with her energetic, yet precise, drumming style. We caught up with Rebecca for an exclusive interview about her journey into music, her career highlights, and what it was like recording “Take on Me” with the band.
GGM: Tell us about how you got your start in music.
RD: I’ve been drumming since I was six years old. I’m self-taught and really took my passion seriously by age 12. I played drums at my church and got more involved through my elementary and high school years, gaining experience anywhere I could.
GGM: Did you go to college?
RD: Yes, I graduated from Austin College Nazarene University in Texas with a degree in commercial music performance, focusing on drums, music, and percussion.
GGM: How did you find yourself in Nashville, TN?
RD: After college, I felt drawn to Nashville. I wanted to dive into the music scene, and Nashville was the perfect place to grow. So I made the move in January 2018.
GGM: Tell us about your career since landing in Music City.
RD: My first gig was as the worship drummer for Grace Chapel in Franklin, TN, and from there, I kept myself open to almost any opportunity — whether it was bands, musical theater, or even smaller shows. I actually met Ed Taylor from 7Descent through a music app. We connected right away, and I was excited that a heavy rock band was open to trying something new by working with me.
GGM: Do you have a favorite gig?
RD: Absolutely! One of the coolest experiences I’ve had was playing at the Texas Glow in the Dark event. It was such a unique setting, and the energy was electric.
GGM: Dream venue?
RD: Playing at the Ryman Auditorium has always been a dream of mine. The history and the magic of that place are unbeatable.
GGM: Who are some of your influences?
RD: Jen Ledger from Skillet, Brad Paisley, and Shania Twain have all been huge inspirations for me. They’re so talented and versatile, and I admire how they bring their own unique styles to everything they do.
GGM: What are some of your career goals?
RD: I’d love to get more involved in studio session work. I love the creative process behind recording and think it would be incredible to be part of more projects like that.
GGM: Can you share more about recording “Take on Me” with 7Descent?
RD: Recording this song was a fantastic experience! I had to stretch myself, especially with incorporating double bass into the track. I love how it turned out and am really proud of what we were able to accomplish together as a band.
GGM: What’s next for you?
RD: Right now, I’m working on my master’s degree at Belmont University, focusing on both commercial music and pedagogy. I’d love to eventually teach and inspire others who are passionate about music.
