Benjamin Carter, who is believed to have embezzled millions of Australian dollars, is no longer suing Sportsbet, an influential local betting brand. Previously, Carter claimed that the sportsbook had taken millions in bets from him despite being aware of his troubled financial situation.
Carter Faces a Decade in Prison for Financial Crime
Carter, for context, was arrested on charges of a money embezzling scheme that took money from eight clients of his tax advisory company, Carter’s Tax Advisory. As a result, the man was charged with a variety of offenses, including 14 counts of obtaining financial advantage through deception, a count of dealing with crime proceeds, and a count of possessing a prohibited drug.
Some of his possible victims include the likes of the beverage giant Drink West, and Nathan Cleary, halfback for the Penrith Panthers.
To make matters worse, authorities believe that Carter could have potential links to Alameddine, a major organized crime group in Australia.
If convicted, the man faces a maximum sentence of a decade in prison.
Sportsbet Allegedly Prompted Carter to Continue Playing
The aforementioned lawsuit against Sportsbet was initiated shortly before Carter’s arrest. The man alleged that the operator had continued to induce him to play despite his financial trouble. Carter insisted that the operator had ignored the red flags in his activity and continued to encourage him to overspend.
Earlier this month, a former financial manager of the Jackson Jaguars initiated a lawsuit against FanDuel for similar reasons.
Between 2021 and 2023, Carter spent AUD 70 million on betting. There were days in which he deposited huge sums into his account without triggering intervention from the operator, he claimed.
However, Sportsbet disputed Carter’s claims, saying that it regularly contacted Carter who always reassured company representatives that his gambling was sustainable. At one point, the company even requested evidence of Carter’s source of funds, which he didn’t provide.
Sportsbet believed that Carter should have identified himself as a problem gambler, which he didn’t do.
Carter did not provide a reason for dropping his lawsuit.
Indiana Jackpot Switcher & Harrah Attacker Await Sentences
In other news, a man from Indiana is currently facing prison time for engaging in jackpot switching in order to avoid paying child support. This is a Level 6 Felony in the state and is considered a serious crime. The man was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail.
In the meantime, the man who violently attacked his ex-girlfriend at Harrah’s Casino back in February faces up to three decades in prison. The trial is set to take place next week.
