Blake Lively’s Brother-in-Law Apologizes for Comments on Legal Battle
Blake Lively’s Brother-in-Law Apologizes After Weighing in on Justin Baldoni Legal Battle
Bart Johnson regrets how he went about weighing in on the It Ends With Us legal battle.
More than one month after the High School Musical actor—who is married to Blake Lively’s older sister Robyn Lively—emphatically defended his sister-in-law amid her legal complaint against It Ends With Uscostar and director Justin Baldoni, he apologized for getting involved.
“Anytime I’ve said anything unkind about someone I’ve regretted it,” Bart wrote in a Jan. 28 post on X, formerly Twitter. “Fortunately that’s almost never and definitely not when I’m at my best.”
But despite his remorse, Blake’s brother-in-law made it clear that he is still in her corner—though he admitted he could show a bit more kindness when coming to her defense.
“If it’s my opinion,” the 54-year-old explained, “even if I’m trying to speak truth or stand up for someone, it’s never good. Even in times where it might ‘feel’ justified and doing the right thing, it makes no difference. There’s a better way. It’s below the standard I have for myself and I regret it.”
Shortly after Blake, 37, filed a legal battle against Justin, 41, with the California Civil Rights Department alleging sexual harassment and retaliation in December, Bart emphatically defended the A Simple Favor star and didn’t hold back in slamming Justin.
“He’s a fraud,” Bart wrote in a since-deleted comment under The New York Times’ Instagram post detailing its lengthy investigation into the alleged smear campaign. “He puts on the ‘costume’ of a hero, man bun and all. Used all of the trendy catchphrases & buzz words for his podcasts. None of its genuine. It’s all theater.”
In the Dec. 21 remarks, the Someone Like You actor even indicated that Justin had been deceiving his fans “for years,” adding that “everyone fell for it.”
“Her complaints were filed during the filming. On record,” Bart continued in a separate comment. “Long before the public conflict. The cast unfollowed him for a reason.”

Referring to the months-long social media discourse surrounding the It Ends With Us press tour and the perception that Blake was downplaying the domestic violence message in the Colleen Hoover adaptation Bart, who had defended his family member at the time, didn’t mince words with his perspective. “No one is without faults,” he concluded, “but the public got played.”
In the weeks since Bart first stepped in to defend Blake, the controversy turned into a full-fledged legal battle. On December 31, the Gossip Girl actress followed up her California complaint—during which she detailed the press tour’s alleged role in the smear campaign—with an official lawsuit against Justin and his Wayfarer Studios. That same day, the Jane the Virgin alum filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The New York Times for their coverage over the initial complaint. (The paper stated that it plans to “vigorously defend against” the lawsuit.)
And then, just earlier this month, Justin filed a $400 million countersuit against Blake, her husband Ryan Reynolds—with whom she shares kids James, 10, Inez, 8, Betty, 5, and Olin, nearly 2—and her publicist Leslie Slone, alleging that Blake was “determined to make Baldoni the real-life villain of her story,” and that she “falsified stories” of his sexual harassment.

“Though Lively claimed Baldoni was the one smearing her,” the lawsuit alleged, “the reality is that it was Lively and her team who carefully planned and implemented a vile smear campaign against Baldoni and Wayfarer to deflect attention and blame for Lively’s disastrous misjudgments.”
In response, Blake’s lawyers have claimed that Justin’s legal filing is just “another chapter in the abuser playbook.”
“This is an age-old story: A woman speaks up with concrete evidence of sexual harassment and retaliation and the abuser attempts to turn the tables on the victim,” her lawyer said in a statement at the time. “This is what experts call DARVO. Deny. Attack. Reverse Victim Offender.”
