Saif Ali Khan is on the mend after a terrifying ordeal.
The Bollywood star—who has appeared in more than 70 films and TV shows—underwent surgery after receiving stab wounds amid a burglary at his home in Mumbai Jan. 16, his representatives confirmed in a statement.
Police officials said, per Variety, that Khan discovered an intruder in his apartment and attempted to intervene in an altercation between the suspect and Khan’s household staff. The 54-year-old received multiple stab wounds during the encounter, per the outlet, and hospital official Niraj Uttamani told news agency ANI that a small piece of a foreign object had been identified near the actor’s spine.
Hospital representatives confirmed Khan is now in stable condition, per Variety, after a team of specialists performed a two-and-a-half-hour procedure.
A female employee at Khan’s home had also been attacked and was being treated, police told CNN.
Meanwhile, local police confirmed the burglary is still being investigated.
“The actor and the intruder had a scuffle,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam told news agency ANI. “The actor is injured and is being treated. Investigation is ongoing.”
E! News reached out to local law enforcement for comment but has not yet heard back.

Khan—who is the son of cricket star Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore and has been acting since his debut in 1993’s Parampara—shares the apartment with his with Kareena Kapoor Khan and their two children.
Representatives for his wife confirmed in a statement obtained by CNN that “the rest of the family is doing fine” and asked that “the media and fans to be patient and not speculate any further as the police is already doing their due investigations.”
Later, Khan’s team issued an additional statement updating fans on the actor’s wellbeing.
“Saif Ali Khan has come out of surgery and is out of danger,” read the statement. “He is currently in recovery and the doctors are monitoring his progress. All family members are safe and the police is investigating the incident.”
They added, “We would like to thank Dr. Niraj Uttamani, Dr. Nitin Dange, Dr. Leena Jain and the team at Lilavati hospital. Thank you to all his fans and well-wishers for their prayers and thoughts during this time.”
