Everything We Know (So Far) About ‘And Just Like That’ Season 3

In a nutshell:

Following the Aidan-resurrecting, Big-denying, abortion-dodging, Nya-ignoring, wildly divisive second installment of Michael Patrick King’s And Just Like That, the series will be back for another round of shenanigans.

Is there a trailer for And Just Like That Season 3?

Not quite yet, though some early footage—featuring Carrie descending the steps of her Gramercy Park house and sharing a moment with Miranda and Charlotte in a bar—was released by HBO in November 2024, as part of a preview of shows coming to the network in the new year.

Will the cast of And Just Like That Season 2 be returning for Season 3?

“We are delighted to share that since the launch of season two, And Just Like That ranks as the #1 Max Original overall, and is the most-watched returning Max Original to date,” said Max’s head of original content, Sarah Aubrey, in a statement in August 2023. “We cannot wait for audiences to see where season three will take our favorite New Yorkers.” And as for the creator himself? “We are thrilled to spend more time in the Sex and the City universe telling new stories about the lives of these relatable and aspirational characters played by these amazing actors,” added King.

Relatable? Umm, sure. Anyway, it’s expected that most of the main cast—Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker, Karen Pittman, John Corbett, and co.—will be back, with two notable exceptions. The first is Sara Ramirez, who played controversial comedian Che Diaz. On January 17, 2024, it emerged that the actor had been dropped from the upcoming season, with Ramirez taking to Instagram to say that their time on the show was over because “casting directors and agents are making blacklists of actors and workers who post anything in support of Palestinians and Gaza to ensure they will not work again.” Other sources from inside the production disputed these claims, saying: “Sara was not fired because they support Palestine and the ceasefire. Sara was fired because Che brought nothing to the show anymore. They were on the chopping block since last season. After Che split with Miranda, the character really held no value anymore and fans found them annoying. The storyline as a struggling comedian was a waste of airtime and Sara knew it.”

Also leaving the show, albeit more amicably, is Karen Pittman’s Nya Wallace, the Columbia Law School professor and friend of Miranda. On March 22, 2024, it was confirmed that the actor would not be appearing in And Just Like That’s third season due to a scheduling conflict with her other projects, which include Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and the Netflix drama series Forever. Sources told Deadline that “there was every intention for Pittman to be in season three… and Nya was written into the scripts. But, after exhausting all avenues to make the scheduling work, that proved impossible.” A network spokesperson added: “It has been a joy to have Karen Pittman play the smart and stunning professor Nya Wallace. As we have thoroughly enjoyed working with this dynamic actress, so too have others. Due to her commitments to two other streamer series, it has become apparent that filming three shows at once isn’t possible. Due to the production realities, we are disappointed to announce that scheduling conflicts will not allow us to continue with this character as part of season three. Karen and Nya will be missed, and her Max family and fans will all be cheering her on in her other endeavors.”

As the pair depart, however, there will be a slew of other familiar faces coming on board. On May 1, 2024, comedian Rosie O’Donnell confirmed that she’d be joining the ensemble for the next installment, sharing a photo of her Episode 1 script on Instagram. The image revealed the title of the series opener (“Outlook Good”), and that the actor would be playing a character called Mary.

She isn’t the only female comedian due to hang out with Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and co in Season 3, either: Saturday Night Live alum Cheri Oteri was later spotted on set in Lincoln Center Plaza. Then, in June, a trio of additional male cast members was confirmed: Logan Marshall-Green (a.k.a. Trey Atwood on The OC); Mehcad Brooks, of Law & Order fame; and British actor Jonathan Cake, formerly of Desperate Housewives. Recurring guest stars Sebastiano Pigazzi (who played Giuseppe, the Italian poet and love interest to Anthony, in Season 2) and Dolly Wells (Joy, a potential new love interest for Miranda) were also promoted to series regulars.

More casting news followed in January 2025, when King confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Broadway stalwart Patti LuPone would have “an arc” on Season 3 of And Just Like That. That’s not all: King also shared that Rosemarie DeWitt would be returning as Aidan’s ex-wife, Kathy, and beloved character actress Kristen Schaal would appear in an unspecified role.

What will happen in And Just Like That Season 3?

Many further details are, understandably, being kept carefully under wraps, but Che and Nya’s departures brings with them a whole host of questions: where will Miranda’s storyline go now? Could her Skipper call-back last season be hinting at the return of yet another original SATC ex who could throw yet another spanner into the works for our favorite self-confessed “sexually confused alcoholic going through a divorce”? (Surely not, but stranger things have happened.)

Elsewhere, will Carrie and Aidan commit to their five-year pause? And after Kim Cattrall’s much-buzzed-about cameo in the Season 2 finale, will Samantha finally return to the fold for good? You may think that preposterous, but remember: This is the show that pulled the rug out from under us with Big’s death in the Season 1 opener, and then went one better by attempting to reframe the entire franchise’s undisputed central relationship, built over two and a half decades, as a mistake; and the same show whose creators told us repeatedly that Cattrall would never, ever make an appearance. So, clearly, anything can happen.

We have, however, been given a few hints at what’s to come. On July 22, 2024, photos began circulating from the set that showed Carrie, Aidan, Miranda, Charlotte, Seema, Harry, Anthony, and Giuseppe all seemingly attending a funeral. Walking hand in hand, Carrie and Aidan looked very much in love, and the former’s friends were seen greeting them with excitement. Given the ebullient atmosphere, it feels unlikely that the death in question will be of a significant main character, though it’s impossible to know for sure.

Then, in January, King teased a few storylines for the new season, telling EW that viewers should expect “a lot of ‘new’ within the familiar,” though “even the familiar characters are going through new things…It’s more than Carrie that has a new apartment. Miranda has a new apartment. We feel that there’s a lot of newness in the world right now, especially for these characters. We wanted to tell new stories and put them through new obstacles.”

Among them? A new professional project for Carrie—bringing with it more of her classic voiceovers. “Carrie’s actually writing a new book and the voiceover is the way into the book,” King told EW. “For the first two seasons of And Just Like That, I took the voiceover away because I didn’t think she knew what she was feeling. She’s starting to feel things again and have an overview of where she is in the world. Writing a book is very private, and so, in an interesting way, it’s almost a direct, intimate conversation with the viewer. Maybe there are things she’s saying to the viewer that she wouldn’t say to even her best friends.” Color us intrigued.

When will And Just Like That Season 3 be released?

The show is set to return to screens this year, though an exact release date is still to be announced.
