Jamie Foxx accepted a Producer Award at the African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Awards on Sunday (Mar. 3), joking about his 2023 undisclosed illness, “clone” rumors, and even his history of courting white women.

Foxx appeared in good spirits as he accepted the award for his work behind the camera. During the event, Jamie joked about his absence from public view while he was sick in 2023. Of course, he handled the whole thing in a joking manner, playing into his roots as a stand-up comedian.

“I’ll be going back to my stand-up sort of roots, and I’ll tell you in my way,” he said of his undisclosed illness. “It’ll be called What Had Happened Was. And it’s got all the things that have happened—especially on our side in our community. Being cloned and all kinds of sh*t. Ni**as will come up with anything.”

He went on, “‘Muthaf**king clone, he a clone!’ Even when they saw me out. ‘That ain’t no gahdamn Jamie, that’s a clone!’ I’m on a boat [waving my hand], ‘No! that’s a clone!’ I dove out of a car to save this Black woman’s purse, and I’m taking a picture, and they go, ‘That ain’t no damn Jamie, that’s a clone!’

“But then they saw me with a white girl. ‘That’s Jamie! You know he love them white bi**hes!’ Come on, man! That’s why I didn’t think I was going to get this award, am I Black enough?” he concluded his joke and speech.

The AAFCA Awards audience was dying of laughter as Foxx cracked up at his own joke.

Foxx was also honored for his Foxxhole Production company with a luncheon held at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.

In April 2023, the acclaimed actor’s daughter, Corinne Marie, shared the news about her father’s illness. “From the Foxx Family, we wanted to share that my father, Jamie Foxx, experienced a medical complication yesterday. Luckily, due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery. We know how beloved he is and appreciate your prayers. The family asks for privacy during this time,” the since-deleted notice read.

In July 2023, Foxx, 56, broke his silence on his mysterious illness. In a video clip, the comedian said he didn’t want his fans to see him ill. He took to social media to have a heart-to-heart with his day ones. “I cannot even begin to tell you how far it took me and how it took me back. I went through something that I thought I would never, ever go through. I know a lot of people were waiting and you know wanting to hear updates, but to be honest with you, I just didn’t want you to see me like that, man.

“I want you to see me laughing, having a good time, partying, cracking a joke, doing a movie, television show,” he continued. “I didn’t want you to see me with tubes running out of me and trying to figure out if I was gonna make it through.”
