Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck Break Up, File for Divorce After 2 Years
Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck’s Divorce: Everything We Know About Their Split
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have had enough.
Exactly two years after their Georgia wedding, the “Waiting for Tonight” singer and the Air star have called it quits, with J.Lo filing for divorce in L.A. County Superior Court on Aug. 20, according to court records obtained by E! News. She listed their date of separation as April 26, 2024, per the filing obtained by TMZ.
The couple did not have a prenup, a source close to her told NBC News.
E! News has reached out to their reps but has not received a comment.
Split rumors first emerged in May after the Hustlers star arrived solo at the 2024 Met Gala, which she co-chaired in New York City. However, Ben’s rep told E! News at the time that the actor was busy filming The Accountant 2 in Los Angeles.
While the pair was later seen out in L.A. together, multiple outlets reported the couple were living apart amid their relationship troubles. By July, Ben had moved forward on purchasing a five-bedroom home in L.A. while J.Lo sold her NYC penthouse for $23 million.
And although she has kept coy when asked about the breakup rumors—telling one journalist, “You know better than that” during a panel in May—J.Lo and Ben further raised eyebrows when they didn’t acknowledge their Las Vegas wedding anniversary on July 16, even spending the day apart on opposite coasts.
If you had a close eye on their love, then you’ll remember that the couple rekindled their romance in 2021, nearly two decades after they called off their first engagement. As a source close to the “I’m Real” singer told E! News that Spring, “It’s natural between them and the chemistry is unreal. They picked up where they last left off and are enjoying each other’s company.”

Fast-forward to the following year, the Grammy nominee—who shares 16-year-old twins Max and Emme with ex-husband Marc Anthony, and the Justice League star, who is dad to Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12, with ex-wife Jennifer Garner—got married in a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas.
“They were right when they said, ‘All you need is love,'” Jennifer wrote in her July 2022 newsletter detailing their intimate ceremony. “We are so grateful to have that in abundance, a new wonderful family of five amazing children and a life that we have never had more reason to look forward to.”

She added, “Stick around long enough and maybe you’ll find the best moment of your life in a drive through in Las Vegas at twelve thirty in the morning in the tunnel of love drive through, with your kids and the one you’ll spend forever with.”
But their love story didn’t end there, as the two went on to walk down the aisle yet again that August. This time, surrounded by even more family and close friends in a lavish ceremony held in Georgia.

And for the Atlas star, celebrating their union more than once seemed fitting, considering the journeys they embarked on apart to get here now.
“Once we called off that wedding 20 years ago, it was the biggest heartbreak of my life,” the singer told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in September 2022. “I honestly felt like I was going to die.”
Noting that their initial split sent her “on a spiral for the next 18 years,” she added, “But now, 20 years later, it does have a happy ending. It has the most ‘would never happen in Hollywood’ ending.”

However, Jennifer wasn’t the only one who got loud about their rekindled love.
“This is the most gorgeous woman in the world,” Ben said during an April 2023 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, adding, “The work ethic is real. The discipline is very real but also, the superhuman thing is real.”
But that’s not to say the pair didn’t have their differences. In fact, Ben expressed their different perspectives on privacy in J.Lo’s 2024 documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told.
“Getting back together, I said, ‘Listen, one of the things I don’t want is a relationship on social media,'” he shared. “And then I sort of realized it’s not a fair thing to ask. It’s sort of like you’re gonna marry a boat captain and you go, ‘Well, I don’t like the water.’ We’re just two people with kind of different approaches trying to learn to compromise.”
Though it was easier said than done, especially when it came to him being the muse of her passion project.
“I know as a writer and director, I certainly do the same things,” he later shared in the doc. “But things that are private, I had always felt, are sacred and special because in part they’re private. So, this was something of an adjustment for me.”
However, he made it known he was on board and happy to support.
“I don’t really love being in the making-of documentary about my personal life, which is why I’m relieved that, it seems like I might be in this but I’m not really,” he noted. “I was worrying for no reason. The movie wasn’t about me. It was about the ability to love yourself and that love story is a lot f–king harder to find than Prince Charming.”
