Lady Gaga Kicks Off the 2024 Summer Olympics With a French Cabaret Performance Worthy of an EGOT
Lady Gaga has officially kicked off the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
On July 26, Gaga performed the opening number as the world’s athletes made their way down the Seine in a parade of boats. Escorted down a grand staircase at Square Barye by a group of men and women carrying dramatic pink feathers, he 38-year-old singer was inspired by iconic French cabaret performances for her rendition of Zizi Jeanmaire’s “Mon Truc En Plume.”
While much of the performance was reminiscent of Jeanmaire’s own performances, Gaga’s custom Dior body suit and opera gloves were also giving sprinklings of Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). You can watch the performance for yourself here.
Is Lady Gaga French? No. Born Stefani Germanotta, Gaga grew up in an Italian American household in New York City. Does that matter? Also no. It’s the Paris Olympics.
Most viewers didn’t mind either. One user shared a Trinity The Tuck meme from RuPaul’s Drag Race, quoting “I don’t know what the fuck she’s saying but girl, I’m living.” That post quickly received over 5,000 likes.
“There’s one thing I would bet my life on and it’s that Lady Gaga will EGOT,” one user wrote on X.com. EGOT, of course, stands for “Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.” She’s already half-way there with 13 Grammy Awards and one Oscar. To some, this performance alone deserves all four.
As one user wrote, “NO ONE WILL EVER DO IT LIKE LADY GAGA.”
