‘Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’ Documentary Set To Premiere on HBO And Max
Lil Nas X is set to premiere his long-waited documentary, Long Live Montero, on HBO later this month.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film—which followed the queer icon on his first headlining international tour in support of his debut album, Montero—will premiere on Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. ET and it will also stream on Max. It first debuted in 2023 at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF, described Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero as “a triumphant ode to the extraordinary power of self-expression, music, and identity.” In a statement, she added, “In this groundbreaking documentary, we witness Lil Nas X challenging boundaries and reshaping the artistic landscape. The film’s captivating journey underscores the profound impact of Lil Nas X, who fearlessly brings audiences together through the universal language of music.”
Mirroring the concert, the documentary is split into three acts: Rebirth, Transformation, and Becoming. HBO noted, “[It] chronicles Montero’s own odyssey as he navigates the pressures of his meteoric rise to stardom, his desire to inspire his fans and accept the naysayers, and his place within the pantheon of Black, queer icons. Capturing this provocative performer at a transformational point in his life, Montero’s elaborate stage show transports the audience through the highs and lows of his life via his deeply personal music, while behind the scenes, the film reveals a sensitive young man still exploring his own queer identity, complicated relationships with family members, and his aspirations as a force for self-expression and acceptance.”
Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero was directed by Zac Manuel and Carlos López Estrada, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker whose credits include Blindspotting, Raya and the Last Dragon and music videos for Jamila Woods, Samm Henshaw, Jhené Aiko, Billie Eilish, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.
News of the film’s debut comes as Lil Nas X teased that his next era will be “the greatest comeback of all time.”
