Yumemakura penned the martial arts novel in 13 volumes under Futabasha’s novel imprint from 1985 to 2003. A sequel novel titled Shin Garouden began under the same imprint in December 2006. The fifth volume went on sale in October 2020.

Jiro Taniguchi (Kodoku no Gourmet) drew a manga adaptation in Asahi Sonorama’s Shishiou magazine from 1989 to 1990.

Keisuke Itagaki (Grappler Baki) began serializing a second manga adaptation in Schola’s Monthly Comic Birz magazine in 1996. After the magazine ceased publication, the manga transferred to Kodansha’s Young Magazine Uppers in 1999, and again to Evening after Young Magazine Uppers ceased publication. The manga went on an indefinite hiatus in 2010.

Itagaki also drew the Garouden Boy prequel manga in Weekly Shounen Magazine from 2003 to 2004. Masami Nobe drew a manga adaptation of the Shin Garouden sequel novel in Weekly Shounen Champion from 2013 to 2014.
