Power Book III: Raising Kanan may be centered around the origins of 50 Cent‘s villainous Power character Kanan Stark, but Patina Miller‘s role as Raquel “Raq” Thomas has undoubtedly stolen the show.
The actress’ portrayal of the fictional South Jamaica, Queens drug lord and mother to protagonist Kanan has captivated viewers over the course of the series’ first three seasons, which examined tumultuous family feuds amongst the Thomas clan amid threats to their criminal empire.
Miller’s seemingly homegrown New York accent and gruff yet sultry demeanor onscreen would lead many to believe that she was born and bred in the Baisley Housing Projects her character once ruled over. However, the thespian’s origins are more Ivy League than Southside.
Born in Pageland, South Carolina, Miller attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities and graduated with a degree in musical theatre from Carnegie Mellon University in 2006. The 39-year-old got her start on Broadway during the latter half of the ’00s, appearing in productions of Hair and Sister Act, the latter for which she won a Laurence Olivier Award and received a Tony Award nomination for her role as Deloris Van Cartier.
Miller found further success as the Leading Player in the 2013 Broadway revival of Pippin, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and has also appeared in various films and television shows, most notably in All My Children and Madam Secretary.
Since landing her role in Power Book III: Raising Kanan in 2021, Miller’s performance as Raq has proved flawless. The queenpin’s dominance and steely demeanor, paired with her sculpted features and physique, have garnered her the affections and compliments of viewers from varying demographics, making her one of the most popular TV characters to be introduced in recent memory.
Another layer of the fabric that has crystallized Raq as a fan favorite is her fictional sense of style, as she can be seen donning the finest designer threads in each and every episode of the series.
