Superman Has Officially Wrapped Filming, James Gunn Confirms: ‘It’s Been an Honor’

Superman, writer/director James Gunn’s big-screen introduction to his DCU, has officially wrapped production, Gunn revealed in various social media posts on Tuesday.

With the announcement, the filmmaker also wrote a heartfelt message thanking the cast and crew, along with a photo from the first week of filming in Svalbard, Norway.

“I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much,” Gunn wrote, in part. “And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor.”

Superman, previously titled Superman: Legacy, is currently set for release on July 11, 2025. There were some concerns that it would need to be pushed back amid last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes, but Gunn confirmed in November that Superman’s release date would be unaffected by them. With the announcement that it’s wrapped filming, it looks well on track to still make that date.

DC Studios co-CEO Gunn, an unusually communicative executive and director on social media, has been providing fans with various updates as his new DCU takes shape behind the scenes. Earlier this month, he confirmed that the only two DC Studios films currently in production were Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with the latter set to release on June 26, 2026.

Gunn, too, has been providing other teases for his impending revamp of DC Studios. At San Diego Comic-Con last week, he made a surprise appearance via video to debut the new DC Studios logo, as well as debut the first teaser for animated Max series Creature Commandos, which will be the first project to come out of his DCU.

Superman’s large cast includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.
