Wonka Wins the First Domestic Weekend Box Office of 2024 With $14.4 Million
Not content with winning the final domestic weekend box office of 2023, Wonka has now added the honor of winning the first domestic weekend box office of 2024 with ticket sales of $14.4 million in its fourth weekend in theaters.
As reported by Comscore, Wonka has now surpassed $164.6 million in North America and $465.8 million worldwide. It also only saw a 36% drop from last weekend’s $23.9 million performance.
While Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom placed second in the final domestic weekend box office of 2023, it lost that spot to newcomer Night Swim this time. However, the Aquaman sequel did pass $100 million in North America.
As for Night Swim, which is a supernatural horror film from Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster that tells the story of a haunted backyard swimming pool, it brought in $12 million in its debut. It added another $5.6 million overseas to help its global tally reach $17.6 million.
In our Night Swim review, we said it “effectively exploits primal fears around water, but its comedy and horror chops aren’t strong enough to keep it from drowning in its more clichéd elements.”
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom placed third with $10.6 million, Migration flew to fourth place with $10.2 million, and Anyone But You rounded out the top five with $9.5 million.
