Workers Memorial Day and Industrial Hygiene and Safety Resources to Protect Employees

Workers Memorial Day is observed in New York and across the rest of the United States on April 28^th. The annual day of recognition was established to acknowledge workers who have died, been injured, or have suffered from exposure to occupational hazards.

The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act of 1970 requires employers to provide employees with an environment free from recognized hazards. These include exposure to toxic chemicals and infectious agents, excessive noise levels, mechanical dangers, heat or cold stress, and conditions that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm.

Protecting the health and safety of workers is indeed a critical function as there were 5,486 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States in 2022, an increase from the 5,190 in 2021, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). BLS also reports that private industry employers reported 2.8 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2022, up 7.5% from 2021.

In just New York City, there were 83 fatal occupational injuries as recently as 2022, which is tragically more than the 70 that occurred in 2021, said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. The number of work-related injuries and illnesses in the boroughs is exponentially higher. Each one of these deaths, injuries, or illnesses represents an individual and is a reminder that employers are required by law to provide a safe work environment for all their workers.
