Half a Million Beds Have Been Recalled for ‘Breaking,’ ‘Collapsing,’ and Causing Injuries

Well, this is unsettling: More than half a million beds sold at major retailers, including Wayfair and Walmart, have been recalled for falling apart and causing injuries.

On January 18, the US Consumer and Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of more than 520,000 beds of various models and sizes from Home Design, Inc. So far, the company has received 128 reports of the affected products “breaking, sagging, or collapsing” after use, resulting in 36 injuries.

The recall involves all sizes of the following beds, which have been sold at Wayfair, Walmart, and Overstock from July 2018 through November 2023:

  • Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Standard Bed (Part Number 80002): a gray, warm gray, or blue bed frame with standard supports requiring a box spring
  • Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Standard Bed (Part Number 80032): a gray or beige bed frame with standard supports requiring a box spring
  • Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Platform Bed (Part Number 80071): a gray, beige, or black bed frame with platform supports
  • Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Platform Bed (Part Number 80053): a warm gray bed frame with platform supports
  • Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Standard Bed (Part Number 80055): a silver gray, gray, or black bed frame with standard supports requiring a box spring

If you’ve got one of those frames in your bedroom, Home Design should be reaching out to you directly, per the announcement. You can also email an image of the bed and law label (the attached “Do Not Remove” tag that usually includes manufacturing details and care instructions), or your proof of purchase, to [email protected] for a free repair or replacement slats and side rails. In the meantime, it’s probably a good idea to snooze elsewhere if you can—on the couch, at a friend’s place, or on an air mattress. Otherwise, you might give a whole new meaning to the phrase “falling asleep.”
