How to Watch Joker: Folie à Deux This Weekend—Before Everyone Is Talking About It
FIVE YEARS AFTER Joker surprisingly became the movie that won Joaquin Phoenix his first Academy Award, the actor is re-teaming with director and co-writer Todd Phillips for another trip into that dark version of Gotham City. The sequel film, Joker: Folie à Deux, is now playing in theaters, bringing Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck/Joker back to the big screen while adding Lady Gaga to the mix as a reimagined version of Harley Quinn named “Lee.”
Early reviews of the film, however, have been polarizing. The movie currently has a 38% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and an even lower 36% from fans; it’s fair to say the movie that was delivered is not necessarily the one fans of the original film expected. For one, it’s a quasi-musical. For another, it’s a courtroom drama. Hardly what fans of Joker expected when a sequel was announced, but doesn’t that make you at least a bit curious about what this movie could really be?
Phillips has already said that this movie will be the end of his time working with DC, and that likely means that both Phoenix and Gaga will be moving on as well. So if you’re really into the Joker world, take notice that this will likely be your last chance to dive into this world on the big screen (and it’s also playing in the IMAX format).
Fans of Phoenix’s work in Joker may be more excited to dive into some of his more artful performances, though. His take on the murderer/villain is solid, but it was his work in early-career movies like To Die For and Gladiator that helped put him on the map, while stuff like Walk The Line and Two Lovers helped to establish him as a fantastic artist. Projects like Her, The Master, Inherent Vice, and You Were Never Really Here helped him reach a high watermark in his career, and you should really check those out.
Phillips, too, has done better work elsewhere. While he got some Academy Award nomination glory from Joker, it was his work on comedies like Old School and The Hangover that were more of his natural calling; those movies got generationally funny performances from the likes of Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, and will certainly stand the test of time more effectively than something like the Joker movies, which borrow heavily from other more notable films.

Where and when will Joker: Folie à Deux be streaming?
We’re expecting Joker: Folie à Deux to have a pretty strong showing at the box office, so that means it will likely be playing exclusively in theaters for longer than most other movies these days. Still, the movie will likely be available to buy and rent on PVOD sooner rather than later—likely by early December at the latest.
Some time after that, since Joker: Folie à Deux is a Warner Bros. film, it will become available to stream exclusively on Max. It’s possible that the studio could push for that by Christmas, though we don’t know for sure just yet.
