The Duchess of Edinburgh is one of the royal family’s secret style stars, rocking many an enviable outfit since her 1999 wedding to Prince Edward.
Meet the most stylish duchess you probably don’t know about.
While many look to Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and Princess Beatrice as royal style influencers, Prince Edward’s wife, Sophie, has proven to be a fashion icon in her own right.
Edward, who is the youngest child of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, received the title of Duke of Edinburgh from King Charles III on his 59th birthday, making Sophie the new Duchess of Edinburgh.
Since their 1999 wedding, Sophie — who was previously known as the Countess of Wessex before her title change and born Sophie Rhys-Jones — has elevated her style from ’90s PR pro to polished senior royal.
From sleek shirtdresses to fabulous fascinators, the Duchess of Edinburgh knows how to pull off the perfect mix of conservative and trendy, wearing stylish but relatable outfits to her royal engagements over the years.
Take a look at 10 of Sophie’s best fashion moments, below.
Royal Ascot Blues
Sophie wore a gorgeous blue ensemble with ruffled bib detail to the June 2022 Royal Ascot, matching her lace dress with an enormous floral-topped hat. She committed to the monochromatic theme with coordinating heels, a snakeskin-print clutch and glittering blue earrings.
Bold in Black
While Sophie’s earlier looks may not receive as much attention as her newer outfits, this black mini she wore to a fundraising dinner in 2014 was certainly a fashion hit. She accessorized the figure-hugging lace dress with black pumps and a green statement necklace.
Royal Wedding Glam
The proud aunt attended Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle in May 2018 while sporting a textured blue crop top and satin skirt by one of her favorite labels, Suzannah. She added neutral accessories, topping the look with a feathered Jane Taylor hat for the happy occasion.
Dreamy Flower Show
The royal was a vision in white when she wore an ethereal midi dress to attend the 2018 Chelsea Flower Show. Sophie paired the loose, batwing-style frock with nude accessories, including the same clutch she carried to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding days before.
Glittering in Green
This gorgeous green gown stood out at the 80th birthday celebrations of the King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway in May 2017. Sophie — who arrived on the arm of the President of Iceland, Gudni Johannesson — attended the gala in Oslo while sporting her often-worn aquamarine tiara.
St. Lucia Brights
Sophie nailed springtime dressing when she wore a bold red dress to kick off a tour of the Caribbean in April 2022, adding neutral wedges and a woven clutch for her island visit.
Commonwealth Day Chic
The mom of two took home major style points for 2020’s Commonwealth Day service when she sported an elegant ivory dress with a ribbon of navy accenting the skirt. She paired the frock with a matching navy fascinator featuring a netted veil along with coordinating pumps and a navy clutch.
Bundled up at Sandhurst
The duchess seemed to take a play from Kate Middleton’s style handbook when she donned a chic pale blue coat while attending the 2019 Sovereign’s Parade at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. She paired the belted style with a blue floral Emilia Wickstead dress underneath, adding slouchy black boots, black gloves and a pillbox-style hat.
Platinum Jubilee Pink
She pulled out all the stops to celebrate her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth, during a Platinum Jubilee church service, wearing a gorgeous rose gold dress by Suzannah ($3,350). The flutter-sleeved dress featured an eye-catching bow detail at the back, and she paired it with a coordinating fascinator.

Blooming at the Races
Royal Ascot 2019 brought another elegant look for Sophie, who sported a pink floral Emilia Wickstead midi dress as she cheered on the ponies. She leaned into the chintz, wearing a wide-brimmed hat that featured the same print as her dress underneath its brim.
