Chael Sonnen reveals the only MMA fighter he believes can become a three-weight UFC champion

Chael Sonnen claims there’s only one mixed martial artist on the planet who has the potential to become a three-weight UFC champion.

While the sport has produced a plethora of two-weight title-holders, nobody has managed to secure that illusive third belt.

Therefore, fans are on tenterhooks as they patiently await someone to make history.

In the meantime, Sonnen, who recently claimed he’d destroy Jorge Masvidal in a street fight, has utilized his analytical brain to determine who he believes could pull this off.

Chael Sonnen says why Alex Pereira is the only fighter capable of becoming a three-weight UFC champion

Chael Sonnen is convinced that Alex Pereira is the only mixed martial artist in the world with the talent to achieve three-weight glory.

However, while ‘The American Gangster’ thinks ‘Poatan’ could reach this feat, there’s another challenge he’d like the Brazilian to take first.

In a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, the former middleweight said: “Pereira is the only guy of my lifetime that I reasonably believe could pull off champ, champ, champ. There’s not enough of a story; there still has to be a why. Moving him up just for the sake of moving him up—I don’t get the point.

“It sounds like he’s going to be offered a title fight at 205 pounds. So, the best-case scenario if he goes to heavyweight, he’s offered a title fight there.

“My belief of Pereira going up to heavyweight, is superseded that Pereira as a piece on the chessboard, would provide. If we couldn’t get Jon Jones vs Tom Aspinall done, what are you going to do? Do you call Ciryl Gane and put him in with Aspinall?

“That’s why it would be helpful to have Pereira at heavyweight, purely as a bargaining chip if needed. But all my opinions are gone if it’s just to do with straight competition.

“Keep a guy at his weight and have him take on a guy he’s already failed against—that’s what true competitors do. Scratch and claw and fight your way back.

Chael Sonnen makes major complaint about the way Alex Pereira trains

While Sonnen has a great deal of confidence in Pereira’s ability, he isn’t fond of everything the striker does.

There’s no doubt that the São Paulo native is a truly gifted competitor.

After all, this is a man who’s not just won world titles in the UFC, but in Glory Kickboxing as well.

However, despite this, Sonnen has voiced a significant concern he has about Pereira.
