‘Dad, We Really Did This Together’ — Maria Sharapova and Her Father Fight Back Tears During Her Hall of Fame Induction

The emotions ran high in Newport, Rhode Island, on Saturday as five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The former World No. 1 shared this milestone with family members and fellow players from her era, creating a day filled with joy and celebration.

How Did Yuri Sharapov Shape His Daughter’s Tennis Legacy?

A notable figure in the front row was Sharapova’s father, Yuri Sharapov, who played an integral role in shaping her professional sporting career. The ceremony also featured a surprise appearance from former World No. 1 and 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, who came to honor one of her fiercest competitors from their playing days.

In her Hall of Fame induction speech, Sharapova paid a heartfelt tribute to her father for his tireless efforts throughout her life in pushing the Russian star to become one of the best in women’s tennis.

Sharapova said, “Dad, we really did this together, didn’t we? I was a little nervous when my dad told me he was going to choose a suit for today without any supervision, but you do. You look good. I approve. It’s always a scary thought as a daughter. I am such a lucky girl to have navigated this journey under your wings when no one believed we could.”

She added, “And you always did. You had conviction in your decisions, and you never looked back. You were tough. You were tough, and you repeatedly expected me to raise my standards. But along the way, you never forgot your most important role, to be my father. It is a gift I am deeply grateful for. Thank you.”

The beautiful words moved both father and daughter, who could be visibly seen fighting back tears as the crowd applauded the heartfelt gesture. However, Sharapova wasn’t the only one who delivered a memorable speech that day, as Williams had made a surprise entry on stage earlier to introduce Maria to the crowd.

What Did Serena Williams Say About Maria Sharapova?

Williams shared glorious words to introduce one of her most challenging rivals from their prime tennis playing days. Praising Sharapova, Williams said, “There are only a few players in my career who challenged me to be the very best, every single time we stepped out on the court.”

Williams continued, “Maria Sharapova was one of them. Whenever I saw her name next to mine in the draw, I made sure I practiced harder. She actually reminds me a lot of Venus. The more I know her, the more I think the things we share and can share in the future (…) I think she could have been my sister.”

The two champions have played exhilarating tennis against each other since 2004, facing off in 22 matches throughout their careers. Williams leads the all-time series 20-2. Sharapova defeated Williams only twice in her career: once at the Wimbledon finals and another time in the 2004 WTA Championships final.
