6 Spectacular Stage Shows to Catch in May

Cristian Măcelaru and Orchestre National de France Concert

Grammy Award-winning conductor Cristian Măcelaru is the Music Director Designate of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Director of the George Enescu Festival and Competition, Music Director of the Orchestre National de France, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Interlochen Center for the Arts’ World Youth Symphony Orchestra, Music Director and Conductor of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and Chief Conductor of the WDR Sinfonieorchester in Cologne, (yes, that’s a lot of titles) and he is bringing his talent to Beijing!

His concerts in the capital will feature works by Bizet, Ravel, and a complete Saint-Saëns program (celebrating his 190th anniversary) including the geart “Organ Symphony.”

Măcelaru will be collaborating with Bruce Liu, winner of the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition, who will present Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major and Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 5 in F major, “Egyptian.”

The King’s Singers

The King’s Singers are a British acappella vocal ensemble that was founded in 1968. They have won Grammy and Emmy awards throughout their history, although the members have changed over the years.

They regularly tour the world – performing in over 125 cities a year, and they are returning to Beijing for another harmonizing show.

People Living in the Flowers

This elegant performance tells the tale of the bond between a mother and her son, their work running a flower shop, and of the hardships of their daily lives.

The China Guangdong Song and Dance Theatre is bringing their colorful rendition of the tale to Beijing, integrating aspects of ballet with modern, classical, and folk dancing for diverse explosion of energetic movement. Be prepared for poetic storytelling and dreamy scenes.

Miloš and Friends: From Bach to Beatles

Guitarist Milos Karadaglic is one of the most prominent performers in the world of classical music. His career began its meteoric rise in 2011, with the release of his international best-selling Deutsche Grammophon debut album, Mediterraneo. Since then, he has earned legions of fans, awards, and worldwide recognition with his chart-topping recordings.

For this special musical mixture of tunes that have transcended time and cultural boundaries, he will be performing iconic compositions spanning everything from Bach to the Beatles.

Fairy Tale Opera: Candy House

The China National Opera theatre will be performing the Grimm’s fairy tale, Candy House, at opera house of NCPA

With its beautiful melody, memorable scenes, and humorous storytelling, Candy House is considered one of the most popular children’s operas in the world. The play is adapted from Grimm’s fairy tale Candy House that tells the story of Hansel and Gretel.

The show features catchy German children’s folk singing segments (in German), and the stage design combines steampunk and dream-like elements. This is a great performance for the whole family!

Five Stars Out of the East

In an exquisite fusion of ancient history and contemporary art, the dance drama, Five Stars Rising from the East, brings to life the story of a 2,000-year-old Han-dynasty brocade, while weaving together past and present scenes.

Xu Rui, the President of Beijing Dance Academy, was inspired to write the play by a famous archaeological find in 1995. An expedition to the Niya Ruins unearthed a piece of Han-dynasty brocade that was inscribed “Five Stars Rising from the East Benefits China.” 

This impeccably costumes and choreographed show will entertain even if you can’t follow the plot!
