There has been speculation that the Denver Broncos are eyeing one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2024 NFL draft, but it’s unlikely that one of those players will fall to them with the No. 12 pick on Thursday.
However, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported on Wednesday that the Broncos could attempt to use one of their top players to trade up in the draft and select the quarterback of their desires.
“The Broncos (No. 12) are still interested in moving up, but there is a limit on the cost they are willing to stomach. Make no mistake, Sean Payton wants a QB,” Russini stated. “Most teams in the top five believe the Broncos could swing massively with a package that may include star CB Patrick Surtain and players on expiring deals.”
Denver picked up the fifth-year option worth $19.8 million on Surtain’s rookie contract on Tuesday, so it would be a bit of a surprise if the team were to trade him two days later. One of the best cornerbacks in the league, Surtain has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons.
However, the 2024 draft class has a slew of talented quarterback prospects who are believed to have bright futures in the NFL. After releasing Russell Wilson earlier this offseason following his disappointing two-year run, the Broncos are desperate to find their quarterback of the future to provide some stability to the franchise.
There would likely be a hefty price that Denver would have to pay if it wants to move up in the draft, but it would be worth it if the team could land a franchise quarterback.
