Olympic 2024 Medal Count: Final Tally, Winners from Day 9 Early Events

Two of the best individual athletes of their generation won their first gold medals at the 2024 Summer Olympics on Sunday.

Novak Djokovic won an epic two-set battle over Carlos Alcaraz to complete his career resume with a gold medal .

Djokovic bested Alcaraz in tiebreaks in each set at Roland Garros to take home a rare gold medal for Serbia.

Scottie Scheffler blew away the field in the men’s golf competition with a nine-under 62 to take gold.

Scheffler tied the course record at Le Golf National to win the 15th gold medal of the Paris Games for the United States.

Team USA is now well ahead of France and China in the overall medal table and just three back of China in the race for the most gold medals.

Novak Djokovic won an incredible showdown with Carlos Alcaraz to win his first-ever Olympic gold medal.

Djokovic beat out Alcaraz in a 95-minute first set at Roland Garros and needed another tiebreak in the second set to beat his Spanish foe.

There were rarely any break of serve in the two-set epic, but when each set got to tiebreak, Djokovic took control. Alcaraz only won five points across the two tiebreaks.

Sunday’s win completed Djokovic’s historic resume. He previously only had one Olympic medal, a bronze in 2008 when Rafael Nadal won gold.

The win was also a massive boost for Serbia. The European nation only has two medals, both of which gold, at the Paris Games.

Another medal in a major event could happen next week if Nikola Jokic and the men’s basketball team make a deep run in the knockout round.

Scottie Scheffler tied the Le Golf National course record with a final-round 62 to secure the men’s golf gold medal.

The two-time major champion rolled in six birdies on the back nine to run past Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Hideki Matsuyama, Tommy Fleetwood and others and shoot a nine-under round.

Scheffler became the second straight American man to win the men’s golf gold medal. Schauffele, the reigning champion, finished in a tie for ninth.

Scheffler had to wait a few minutes after his round for the gold medal to be confirmed. Fleetwood came up short in his quest for first from the final threesome on course.

Fleetwood settled for the silver medal one shot back of Scheffler, while Matsuyama landed a bronze medal with a one-shot advantage over Rahm and France’s Victor Perez.
