Both will see action this week in group action, with their sights set on advancing to the knockout round.

Who will they compete against and which other national teams will be in action, their goals similar in nature as they seek to medal on the grandest stage in international sports?

Mallory Swanson Establishing Herself as Leader of US Women’s Soccer

Amid the United States’ dominant 4-1 victory over Germany Sunday, Mallory Swanson continued to establish herself as the country’s new leader.

Swanson scored her third goal in two Olympic matches at the 26th minute, becoming the second woman to score three times in the group stage. The first? Fellow countrywoman Abby Wambach.

Sophia Smith, one of the young faces of the team’s future, followed suit, finding the goal twice.

The 26-year-old has 37 international goals to her record, making her the most prolific scorer on this revamped roster.

Debuting for the USWNT in 2016 when she was just 17 years old, she has been in big moments, against the best the world has to offer and few on the team are better suited to take on a leadership role than she.

Her play on the field has certainly reflected as much to this point in the Olympic games. There is no reason to believe that will change anytime soon, especially as she builds momentum for both herself and her team.

Up next for the Americans is Australia, a team that the Germans defeated in lopsided fashion. Barring a misstep, the Swanson and Co. should find themselves in a position to compete for a medal.
