Pregame Thoughts: Saints vs Commanders
The New Orleans Saints welcome the Washington Commanders into Caesars Superdome for an homecoming of sorts for former LSU star Jayden Daniels.
The Black and Gold picked up a win last week in New York, taking down the New York Giants 14-11 on a blocked field goal at the end while Derek Carr suffered a broken hand. Now, its the Jake Haener show in the Big Easy.
Here are a few things to watch for today:
DON’T LET JAYDEN RUN FREE
The Saints have historically struggled against more mobile quarterbacks, like Jalen Hurts, Michael Vick back in the day (who didn’t struggle against him though), and former Commanders QB Robert Griffin III.
Daniels is an excellent passer with great downfield accuracy, but he also loves to tuck it and go when he feels there’s nobody open. When he takes off, don’t let him break contain and rush for 30+ yards. Get him on the ground quickly and limit the damage.
GET HAENER COMFORTABLE
The second year signal caller out of Fresno State will be making his first career start this afternoon. Haener doesn’t have much experience outside of the preseason, so the best course of action for the Saints early is to get him into a rhythm and develop confidence.
Short passing routes, strong runs from Kamara, and let him settle into the gameplan before you start looking at chunk plays down the field.
FINAL THOUGHTS
My final thoughts are pretty simple: the Saints need the win today to truly stay alive in the final stretch of the season, but it won’t be an easy one. Add in the fact that Marshon Lattimore is making his Commanders debut back in the dome where he’s made so many key plays. Find a way to overcome the adversity you’ve been dealt and get the win.
