Olympic silver medallist Hayden Wilde made it two wins out of two with another impressive victory at supertri London.

The Kiwi was to the fore throughout and made the most of a short chute on the final run to see off Matt Hauser and Léo Bergere.

But there was disappointment for the man who beat Wilde to Olympic gold in Paris as Alex Yee lost touch with the pack on the second swim and finished down the field.

Stage 1

It was all about Stars & Stripes duo Chase McQueen and Seth Rider early on.

McQueen led out the swim and bagged the first short chute and then the two worked together superbly on the bike to put distance between themselves and the rest on cobbles which had dried a little bit compared to the earlier women’s race.

That enabled them to deny anyone else the second short chute but the battle the majority of the crowd wanted to see started to materialise on the run as Yee moved to the front, shadowed by great rival Wilde.

Wilde put the hammer down towards the end of the run though, which helped him bag the final short chute – how important could that prove to be later on?

Stage 2

The second swim really shook things up – the big winner was Hauser who vaulted from 10th to third.

But Yee made the opposite move as he dropped down to 12th starting the bike and suddenly had 17 seconds to make up on leader Wilde, who was being followed by his Crown teammate Vincent Luis and seemingly in the perfect position.

Starting the run there was a front group of six – Wilde, Luis, Hauser, Rider, Bergere and Kenji Nener.

Yee was still 17 seconds adrift and hopes of a home double following Georgia Taylor-Brown’s win in the women’s race were starting to fade.

News now came in as to who would be taking the two short chutes – Michael Gilliam going with Wilde for Crown Racing while Rider got the Stars & Stripes one.

Stage 3

It was a Podium Racing one-two-three after the final swim, through Hauser, Bergere and Nener.

Luis was four seconds back in fourth, just ahead of Rider and Wilde and the winner was surely going to come from the front six, with 26 seconds and more back to the rest.

Yee meanwhile was now completely out of it, 43 seconds back.

There was a rare moment of relative calm as the front six came together on the bike so it was down to the ninth and final leg and a running race, with Wilde and Rider the two with short chutes to come.

But there was also another rarity as Wilde was unusually slow in transition, leaving Hauser to lead out the run.

The short chute did the trick for the Kiwi though as it put Wilde back in front and he never looked like being caught, powering to a second straight win to take command of the overall standings. It was also his third win in London following 2021 and 2022.

Hauser stayed on well for second, with Bergere completing the podium in third.

In the individual standings, Wilde takes a commanding lead on 44 points, with Hauser on 35, Luis on 28 and the trio of Bergere, Nener and Yee on 27 points.
