Following Daniel Jones’ signing to the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad, rumors are starting to swirl about the future of stating quarterback Sam Darnold.
Darnold will be a free agent at the end of this season, with rookie J.J. McCarthy the only quarterback under contract for 2025, making the future uncertain. As Darnold leads the Vikings to a 9-2 season, his value is sure to rise heading into free agency, with the market for the 27-year-old expected to be competitive, according to Russini.

Darnold’s return next season remains a possibility as McCarthy recovers from knee surgery, while Jones focuses on developing behind a strong coaching staff.
“It’s simply a smart way for the Vikings to explore their options and keep their quarterback situation flexible for the future,” said The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
Darnold signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Vikings prior to the season that included a $6.25 million signing bonus and $8.75 million guaranteed.
Darnold has posted stellar numbers this year, accumulating 2,717 yards and 21 touchdowns, ranking fourth in the league, along with the 14th-best quarterback rating at 59.4.
